One of my favorites has always been:

"So long and thanks for the fish"

I've never seen this either and I've lived in the Mt St Helens area for 30 years. I have been where the picture was taken, Yale Reservoir. The view looks correct and the skiing equipment for that time of year is also correct (very cold water).

Here's a another view north from Yale Reservoir.

Sad news -- both in terms of layoffs and the direction they are going by trying to integrate more with the ironsource teams.... ick.

What's up, Chuck?

Doom 2.

I was 8 years old with a brand new computer setup in the basement. I finally finished installing the game (3.5" floppies) and drivers for the joystick (yep, no mouse) around 10PM.

About 90 minutes later, an imp scared me so bad I screamed and broke the joystick in half.

Interplay's splash screen used to include their logo of "By Gamers for Gamers".

I seem to remember Idiocracy having a Masturbation Network on TV where people would just cook/eat food and talk about the news.

I'd love to be included - thanks!

I would love a deep dive into the 8 years during the XP -> Vista-> Win7 progression. I actually consulted briefly at MS during this period (2006) and it was very <ahem> interesting. Some of the stories I could share are bananas.

Watching A New Hope with my 4 year old daughter was perhaps the best movie experience I ever had.

I tend to measure "skillset" progress in terms of game mechanics. Have you implemented any kind of inventory system? Or how about a save game system? Fast travel to a different scene? Etc...

Now "progress" for the business side of game dev is a whole other animal.... ;)

I agree.
The dull stuff gets a free pass and only REAL art is criticized. ;)

That's a famous Bill Hicks bit about a waffle waitress asking him "why you reading?".

Winamp was the best. It supported streaming music from college campuses all the way back in early 2000's maybe 1999(?). Nobody else was doing anything like that then.
Chronix Aggression anybody?

I built for my first computer in 1998. It was a K6 with voodoo2 graphics card. IIRC all the components, including a 19" CRT monitor weighing 60 pounds, were around $1500.

Even just downloading and rating mobile games helps new people so very much. That is to say folks who are really attempting to make a game and not a copy-pasta job to sell ads.

If there's ever a Sekiro DLC, I'll be disappointed if this guy isn't guarding a bridge waiting to kill me 3,4, or 58 times.... ;)

I once spent a year building a C# reporting app for a group of chemists who built 100's of reports using excel VBA and VB6.

Those were dark, dark times in my SDE career.... (shudder).

I only had a retainer for a couple years but used to have a lot of unpleasant dreams about teeth falling out.
You're not alone. ;)
