What's the difference between a cardiac arrest and a heart attack?

During a cardiac arrest, a person will be unresponsive and not breathing normally. During a heart attack, they will remain conscious and keep breathing. A heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest.

Yesterday we shared Heinrich's story. Heinrich was warming up with his rugby team, when he went into cardiac arrest.

Heinrich’s day was a usual one, he was warming up at rugby training with his club.

He remembers feeling a cold chill travel up his neck, feeling breathless and needing to take a knee, and feeling a thud. Heinrich was in cardiac arrest.

An AED is a safe and simple-to-use device, used to restart the heart during cardiac arrest. They are lifesaving devices, and you can’t accidentally shock someone.

CPR alone is not enough, you need a shock from an AED to restart a heart.
