I know when the blackbirds are feeding babies, because they fly off with 2-3 bits of dried catfood in their beaks. Am impressed that our one legged blackbird seems to have become a father.

Coster did an interview for NZH a year into the job. It seems he never saw what he didn't want to see:
Coster says the revelations of the 2007 Commission of Inquiry into Police Conduct – sparked by Louise Nicholas' highlighting the way Police handled allegations of sexual misconduct against their own – was the low point for him. "But we need to be clear, I never saw in my experience prior to that any of the worse behaviours that came out. The worst of those behaviours were only ever in pockets."

You can paint all sorts of nice words on this … but to an outsider looking in, and … I mean even me, this looks like a cover-up.”

This is a terrible photo but I just had this incredibly delicious meal of grilled salted mackerel, tofu in cheonggukjang, red rice and assorted salads and pickles and it cost 34nzd for 2 people

As well as an enormous TV at the end of the bed, our new hotel room provides condoms and 'love more' massage oil. Hope they changed the sheets

Are you on your way to Korea? I paid NZ$2 for the best espresso ever yesterday. It does cost more in Seoul but is always excellent

Several cities in Korea have old bits of town where the people have painted murals on the outside of their houses. I wasn't expecting it but am utterly charmed

Spent the day visiting all the sites commemorating May 18 and the fight for democracy. Overwhelmed by the bravery of so many mostly young people and the venal cruelty of the armed forces

My main reason for visiting Cheongju was to go to two of the art museums. I have discovered some outstanding Korean artists. Choe U-Ram's kinetic sculptures are unforgettable
