Every higher-resolution tv will upscale lower-resolution signals to display at the actual panel resolution, and this has been a common thing for many, many years as it's basically necessary to display the picture correctly. It's just now that they can market that as being "AI-enhanced", they do.

Assuming the leaks are legit, they definitely aren't great. Dyes are super faded on the unrestored negative clips. They're probably using OCNs and interpositives for like density reference and hopefully one of the small handful of Technicolor prints for color reference.

I mean, I feel like this all reads as a very heavy satire of the ignorant American view of communism, rather than directly criticizing the USSR or anything. And it places us on the same level as the Dictator, who is sitting in the audience and "forcing" them to perform the hits.

Citing the adherence to medium specificity as a measure of whether a work is a "weak" or "strong" example of its medium is a flawed premise imo. But even if it weren't, most of DE only impacted me as strongly as it did explicitly because of my interaction with the game's mechanics and tasks.

Books are unsociable activities. And Disco Elysium is, effectively, a book with branching paths; the majority of the game is spent reading (or listening). The conclusion of the game was more affecting to me than any book I've ever read. You need to overcome your bias and think critically a bit.

This is a popular misconception. The quote comes from Tsurumaki (an animator, AD, and episode director, not the show's creator) specifically saying there was no intended Christian religious message in the show, as none of the staff were Christian themselves. The images still have intent and meaning.

As if the FAA Medical clearance process isn't a complete joke that encourages people to hide their diagnoses and not seek treatment.

That album is one hell of a nostalgia trip/guilty pleasure. Way Away and Breathing are both bangers, and the drums are actually really good.

I mean Lucas has said many times the original film is a commentary on Vietnam. He literally wrote it while he was developing Apocalypse Now, and a lot of the DNA of his version of Apocalypse made it into Star Wars.

Getting 46 for the first time is like beating the tutorial, tbh. It's legitimately an insane choice by the dev to roll credits after it lol

While medium specificity is definitely useful for both presenting a convincing argument for "games as art" and evaluating their most essential strengths, it's important to note that it is not a prerequisite for their status as art. If they are art, they are art regardless.

As I read more and more academic writing on various topics, it drives me nuts how widespread this exact phenomenon is. So many reactionary talking points are entirely based on a fundamental misreading and misunderstanding of specified language that is very clear in context.
