Led by Chief James H. Williams, the Red Caps, a group of mostly Harlem-based, college-bound Black men, formed an essential workforce at Grand Central Terminal in the early 20th-century. These #NYTMCollection objects include Red Cap badges and baggage tickets.

#BlackHistoryMonth: When the doors to Grand Central Terminal opened to the public in 1913, passengers were greeted by dozens of African American baggage porters, each donning a uniform complete with a red cap. These #NYTMCollection photos show some of the Red Caps at Grand Central Terminal.

#MetroCardMonday: This 2014 #NYTMCollection #MetroCard was issued to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. When it opened, the majestic Verrazzano featured the longest suspension span in the world at 4,260-feet.

Built by Kawasaki, R143 cars were the first fully automated fleet in the subway system. The cars feature Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, which uses a moving signal system. CBTC reduces the space between trains, allowing more trains to run and making travel more efficient.

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 2002, R143 cars entered revenue service in the #NYCsubway system. The R143 began its tenure on the L line and was the first NTT "New Technology Train" series order by the "B" Division.

This 1972 #NYTMCollection photograph shows an aerial view of Roosevelt Island (known then as Welfare Island) looking south with #Manhattan at right and Queens at left. No Roosevelt Island Tramway is visible as it did not open until 1976.

These bus lines began in 1932 and replaced street car service originally operated by the Second Avenue Railroad. Although the conversion from street cars to buses changed the landscape of Manhattan's East Side, it meant that New Yorkers still had access to transit on York, First and Second Avenues.

#ObjectSpotlight on this circa 1915 cast-iron lamp and its contract drawing with installation instructions.

Lamps like these were placed at the entrance to stations on the New York Municipal Railway, a subsidiary of the BRT. This one was used either on the Broadway Line or the Fourth Avenue Line.

Eventually his territory included Metro-North’s entire service area and his talks covered a broad range of safety issues.

Metro Man is still on staff at Metro-North, but is now portrayed by a human in a robot suit. Vintage Metro Man is shown in this #NYTMCollection poster and these photographs.

Metro-North has had several public safety initiatives over the years, including the friendly robot “Metro Man.”

Metro Man joined the team in 1983, and was originally sent into communities to teach children about the difference between diesel service and third rail power.

#BlackHistoryMonth: In 1971, a group of Black women employees at the MTA broke two glass ceilings when they were promoted the Assistant Train Dispatcher. Retha Cholson, Eleanor McBean, Clovis D. Washington, and Velma Newton were the first-ever women and the first Black women to have this role.
