This is problem gambling awareness month. With the unprecedented rise in online sports gambling the State has reaped substantial benefits - mainly exponentially increased revenue for education. Online sports gambling has provided a service to New Yorkers who want to place a bet on their team while vastly reducing the revenue to illegal operators and organized crime. Nevertheless, I and my fellow commissioners are concerned about the potential for abuse that exists with online gambling. We take seriously our responsibility and that of our licensees to address the problem of irresponsible gambling. Working with our colleagues at OASAS and the New York Council on Problem Gambling, as well as our licensees, we are exploring still unchartered waters in seeking prevention and treatment of problem gambling. To that end on March 20, Commissioner Skurnik and I met in-person and virtually with representatives of the industry and representatives of OASAS and the New York Council on Problem Gambling to explore the proliferation of sports gaming programing and the increased blurring (from the Commission’s perspective) of the distinction between information about the games and inducement to place a wager in the form of line spreads and odds. The statute is clear: Any inducement to gamble must be accompanied by information directing the person who feels he or she has a problem to appropriate treating modalities. I also need to acknowledge the considerable resources that our licensees have devoted to the prevention and treatment of problem gambling. More needs to be done and we will do it.
