The oppression of Black holidays isn’t just a "Black issue" — it reflects the health of democracy and the inclusivity of national identity. When any group’s contributions are dismissed, it undermines the shared sense of belonging that democracy requires to thrive.

Black celebrations affirm identity, culture, and community. The suppression of these events sends a message that Black contributions to society are not valued.

When these holidays are minimized or ignored, it perpetuates a false, one-dimensional narrative of American history that centers on whiteness. This denial of history makes it harder for the U.S. to reckon with its legacy of slavery, segregation, and systemic racism.
