The Suquamish Tribe recently honored the late Merle Hayes by renaming its hatchery as the Merle A. Hayes Salmon Hatchery at Grover's Creek, with Hayes' family and tribal council attending. Hayes dedicated his life to protecting the tribe's treaty rights and natural resources.

Silver Reef Casino in Ferndale will host a screening of FISH WAR, the feature-length documentary about the Fish Wars of the '60s and '70s and resulting Boldt Decision, at 6 p.m. Mon., Oct. 13. The event is free but donations to Bellingham SeaFeast will be accepted.

The Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe tagged dozens of Dungeness River chinook this summer to track their migration patterns as they swim back to their spawning grounds through drought conditions including low water flow and high water temperatures.

Tribal members and the larger community came together on the Seattle waterfront Saturday to celebrate Salmon Homecoming. The celebration of salmon's fall return was marked by vendors, artists, a powwow and a canoe landing.

Puyallup elder and leader Ramona Bennett Bill, a veteran of the Fish Wars and other battles for treaty rights, launched her memoir "Fighting for the Puyallup Tribe" at a talk and signing last week at the Washington State History Museum. The book is now available for purchase.

The Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge will host two screenings of the documentary FISH WAR Aug. 28. The screenings will be at 1 and 7 p.m. in the visitors center auditorium. Seating is limited, and free tickets will be available until one hour until showtime.

Canoes participating in Paddle to Elwha 2025 arrived on the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe's beach last week, despite a few days of wild weather and a tsunami warning, and were welcomed to come ashore, eat, get warm and gather with friends and family. Protocol continues until August 5.

Dozens of tribal canoes landed in Port Townsend on Tuesday as a stop on this year's Tribal Canoe Journey. The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe will be welcoming all the canoe families on Thursday, as hosts of this year's gathering.

The Makah Tribe and Olympic National Park are seeking volunteers for a salmon habitat project at Lake Ozette on July 16, 17 and 18; the tribe and park staff will remove vegetation from part of the shoreline to improve habitat for sockeye. To volunteer, email jonathan.scordino@makah.com.

With songs, words and fish for all participants to enjoy, the Quinault Indian Nation last week celebrated the return of blueback — a genetically distinct type of sockeye prized by the tribe. Recovery of the blueback is an ongoing mission of the tribe.

The Skokomish Tribe spent Earth Day with Hood Canal School K-8 students, engaging them in a variety of activities that included learning about water quality through chemistry, collecting data on shellfish, experiencing the obstacles that salmon have when migrating, and traditional plants.
