I notice the sketched out elements are changing update to update (like in the foreground to the right especially), are you changing everything compositionally and then locking everything you like most in with pen or doing some kind of other process?

Yeah the Wikipedia page says “The Directorate asked for an inviting entrance to a planned Decorative Arts Museum with the theme being left to Rodin's selection.” Idk about you but the circles of hell are not the first thing I think of for “inviting” although seems like he had the idea beforehand

Just looked it up, the story behind it is crazy! It was a commission piece for a museum that never ended up getting built, and he was pretty much tweaking it at the hotel it got placed at instead on and off until Rodin died. Art history rocks
