She watches Rose's silhouette disappear up the right set of stairs to the second floor. There's two sets of stairs on either side of the entry room?? She hadn't noticed before. She goes to follow and then remembers that the second floor was one of the places she was told not to go.

"What was special about that?" Tess asks. That was a fucking fast answer. Rose goes quiet. "You okay?" Tess asks after a couple minutes pass.

"I'd rather not talk about that," Rose abruptly stands and leaves the room.

"Wha," Tess is very confused so she gets up and follows.

"Yes, well history is full of horror," Rose says, "Any more questions about who I am?"

"What's your favorite part of history?" Tess asks, hoping to find something less nightmarish.

"Berlin, Germany 1926," Rose answers immediately.
February 11, 2026 at 1:10 AM
"Everyone calls him 'Alexander the Great'," Rose scoffs, "He was more of an Alexander the malevolent rapist of young boys, and what would now be understood as… transgender…? girls, who also had a domination complex. He was vile."

Tess feels like every answer she gets is some horrific thing.

"Like, the most powerful?" Tess says but isn't sure of herself so it comes out as a question.

"Hmmm. The most influential you probably mean," Rose ponders. Who was the most influential figure… "Probably Alexander the third… of Macedonia." She taps her finger on the table.

"Who?" Tess is stumped.
February 11, 2026 at 12:52 AM
"Sooooo, you've just been around? Like through all of history?" Tess asks.

"Why?" Rose is suspicious of Tess's intentions.

"Who's the most famous person you ever met?"

"I suppose that depends on what you mean by famous," Rose chuckles.

"Oh, nothing. I just find amusing your penchant for absurd lines of thought," Rose says. She sighs with relaxation. Tess really does seem to have an effect on her. How strange that this insufferable woman could find so many ways to tug at Rose's humanity in mere days and in so many directions.

"Damn," Tess says. She didn't realize she was talking to a mummy.

Rose turns and looks at Tess and then bursts into laughter. "Hah-hah-hah-hah-hah," she cackles, borderline maniacally.

"What?" Tess is confused. Did she say something funny? Or think it? Huh?

They really are such fucking traitors

"I died afterwards and then woke up in the dirt and have been wandering ever since then." Rose says, her affect completely devoid of emotion.

"How long ago was that?" Tess asks.

"Six or seven thousand years. I'm not actually sure how old I am," Rose answers quietly.

"I managed to avoid being married off like many of the other girls of the village. My mother was quite protective of me. One day… war arrived on our shores. The warriors of a neighboring tribe invaded and…" Rose pauses and stares at the flickering flames of the candelabra.

"I was born in a place that has had many names, but most recently it's been called Alexandria," Rose responds finally, "I lived in that part of the world for many, many years. It was originally a fishing village called Rakhad. Red hair and pale skin was unheard of back then so I was… shunned."

Danke schön, muchas gracias, merci beaucoup @spookalucca.tv!
February 10, 2026 at 11:52 PM
"I don't know. How about you? Where were you born?" Tess desperately wants to change the subject. If she even thinks about it and Rose finds out… No don't think about it. Don't think about it.

"Hmm," Rose watches Tess carefully. She's hiding something and that something causes her fear.
February 10, 2026 at 10:54 PM
"What? I cannot make out what you're thinking or trying to say," Rose frowns.

"I don't wanna talk about it," Tess mumbles a little louder.

"And why is that?" Rose asks. She senses fear.

"Can we talk about something else?" Tess whispers.

"Sure… What would you like to talk about instead?"
February 10, 2026 at 10:54 PM
"So… What now?" Tess asks timidly.

Rose tilts her head and looks over at Tess. "Why were you out driving in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere?" she asks quietly.

Tess mumbles incoherently with a distant stare.

Rose quickly looks away and drinks the rest of her wine in one swig. She wipes away the tears from her eyes and lowers her leg down and sits straight. She glances over at Tess and their eyes briefly lock again before they both look away. Would it be okay to move on? To let go? To try living again?
February 10, 2026 at 10:26 PM
Tess looks up at Rose and wonders if she should try to comfort her but also feels scared. She looks out the window at the snowy forest outside. It's overcast but has stopped snowing finally. The trees sway with the wind ever so slightly. She sighs. She looks back at Rose and catches her staring.
February 10, 2026 at 10:26 PM
Rose puts the book down and rests her forehead on her knee, letting her arms fall to her sides limp. Why did Tess have to show up now? After all this time? She closes her eyes tight and listens to the thrum and flow of Tess's circulatory system and breathing. The sound is soothing to listen to.
February 10, 2026 at 10:26 PM
An eerie silence settles over the room with only the crackling of the fire making any noise. Rose turns to the next page and sips her wine. A black tear streaks down her cheek while she reads. Tess watches the tear roll down Rose's face. She quickly looks away and finishes her stew.
