Silver & Iron, Part One
43/43 (Finish)
Ashley’s face is slack, exhausted, gazing after where the vampire was. After a second, he straightens, a weak smile on his lips, and he lets out a quiet laugh of relief - before his hand makes a sticky sound and he flinches, cutting his eyes away to look at it. He had unknowingly been resting his hand in the puddle of the girl’s blood. His eyelids droop. In smaller panels Ashley is shown pulling out his phone, calling Maddoc - his contact photo a picture of the man cheering at a baseball game - and lifting his phone to his ear, leaving a backlit thumbprint of blood on the screen. While this is happening, other panels show the two dead bodies of the adults the infected werewolf had attacked - a man with short hair and glasses, and a woman with long wavy fair hair, both their faces obscured as they lie in their own blood and organs - as well as the body of the infected werewolf itself, now in human form, his eye sockets empty and fanged mouth hanging open, skin tight and emaciated. Ashley’s hand, still marked with blood in the creases and fingernails, reaches down to take back the dagger still protruding from his face. Over everything we see Maddoc picking up the outgoing phone call and speaking. “Hey, kid! How’s the show? You and Mi-Mi having a good time? Heh. Don’t tell me you ran out of ink already. Ash? Haha. You butt dial me? Hellooo?” The full page is nothing but two speech bubbles over pure black. The first speech bubble, much much larger and emptier than it needs to be, contains only one word - “Maddoc?” Its lettering ever so slightly off. Without missing a beat, the responding bubble says “Don’t move. I’m on my way.” Serif text in the bottom right screen reads “Part 1 End”.

Silver & Iron, Part One
04/43
Comic page titled “Silver & Iron” part one, by Landeg. Content warnings: Violence, gore, death, including death of a child. Most of the page is an establishing shot of an impressively ornate university building. The sky is overcast, the trees are bare of their leaves, and the people milling about are wearing warm clothes. A girl walks by in the foreground, cut off by the edge of the page. In the bottom panel she turns slightly to look at someone just out of view, only their hand entering the frame. “Hey, Amelia! Wait!” Amelia, smiling: “Hm? What’s up?” The man who had been reaching for Amelia in the previous panel now looms over her, so much taller than her that he blocks the sun. He is revealed to be the bearded man from the cover image, though he is smiling cheerfully today, dressed in a denim jacket and a sweater over a collared shirt, with a messenger bag over his shoulder. In his large hand he brandishes a small novelty pen topped with a cartoon cat face. He says, “You dropped your pen back there! Wouldn’t want it to get stepped on. It’s cute!” A couple walking past both double-take at him. Amelia (startled): “Ah! I mean thank you Ashley!” She reaches tentatively for the pen but quietly thinks “I’ll never get used to it!! I’m always too low and end up looking at his-” her thought is cut off by the next panel, where two other girls observe Ashley chatting with Amelia. The other people walking past are all at least a head shorter than Ashley. The first girl says, “You’ve met Ashley, right? Don’t judge me, but I wasn’t expecting a guy like him to be so… sweet? Y’know? Not that it’s a bad thing! But he could be really intimidating if he wanted…” The other woman smiles as she replies, “Not just you! I took medical ethics with him and had the exact same first impression. But let’s just say that once you meet the rest of his family…” Ashley smiles blithely as he waves Amelia off, saying “okay, see you then!” Unaware of the two figures approaching him from behind until they start to mockingly repeat him, saying “Ameliaaa, ohhh Ameeeliaaa…” The second woman from before finishes her statement “... it all starts to make sense.” Ashley turns around to see two even larger, bulkier, hairier men towering over him. The man on the left has long straight hair down to his back tied into a low ponytail at the base of his neck. He has downturned eyes, sideburns, and a thin mustache and matching beard; he wears 70s glasses frames with a glasses chain, a black turtleneck, and a long white coat. He has a small scar over his lips and another on his left ear shell. The man on the right is slightly shorter than him but more muscular, with cropped shaggy hair pushed back from his face, small scars over his nose and cheek, and a short but thick full beard which connects his hairline to his eyebrows. He wears a letterman jacket. They both have noses like Ashley’s and wear similar ear piercings - two earrings connected by a chain - though the scruffy-looking man has additional piercings. They leer down at Ashley, who is depicted with sad little puppy ears as they tease him - Glasses man: “Thank God I was there to save your pen, Amelia! Where would you ever find another one?” Letterman guy: “But y’know, I’ve got an even bigger pen y’could borrow, Meelie…” Ashley yells back at them, embarrassed - “What are you doing here!? - stylised as some kind of tiny marketable plushie three apples tall with the word yap in his mouth. The men are bemused by his reaction. Glasses man: “I’m giving a guest lecture in about an hour. Don’t you see the lab coat?” Letterman guy: “An’ I gave this bum a ride so now he owes me lunch.” Ashley pouts to the side. “Couldn’t you have gotten lunch somewhere off campus?” Letterman guy plants a hand over his heart as he drawls, “Wait, you actually embarrassed of me? Kinda hurting my feelings bro. Anyway, you coming home before you go out on patrol or what?” People in the background can’t help but stare at the three of them. Ashley turns back to the other two, now smiling more openly - “Oh! Actually, I was about to text, Amelia just invited me to her friend’s show - would it be-” Letterman bro crowds over Ashley, slinging an arm over his shoulders with a leer. “Are you kidding!? I would never cockblock you! I keep telling you to get out more-” Ashley, unimpressed, trying to fend him off: “I was going to say I’ll have to meet up with you later-” Letterman bro: “Nuh-uh. Not this time. Take one night off. Just remember to keep a cap on your pen ‘cause some mistakes are harder to erase-” Ashley: “Ugh! Maddoc! It’s not like that!” Behind them the third man is wandering away, hands in pockets. Someone half his size stares at him as he goes. Ashley continues - “It’s a group thing!” - but Maddoc is already ignoring him, disengaging and looking off while saying “Hold on, that cheap asshole is trying to escape.” (Distant voice: “I’m not cheap. I just don’t want to be seen with you either.” Ashley: “She has a boyfriend-” Maddoc: “Catch you in the morning, kid. Get back here, Full-eyes!” Ashley: “And I keep telling you, she’s… not… my type” (type is in quotes). He trails off as Maddoc leaves him behind, distinctly more rumpled than before, then glances to his right. He catches the two women who were watching him before, whispering to themselves - “Oh my God” “See?” - before they notice they’ve been noticed and rush off, shushing each other and saying “oops”. Ashley flushes as he casts his eyes back down, fixing his collar with an embarrassed expression. “Great,” he thinks. “As if I wasn’t enough of a sore thumb already.” And mutters “Thanks a lot, guys…”
