Broadly it was technological and especially pharmacological development from the 1940s to the 1960s that shifted the dial.

It was a great talk. Needless to say can't do it justice in a few slides...but these ones especially made me think...

Prof Fong argued, using maternal mortality as an example, that we spend too much time reflecting on the recent and flat bit - ie after about 1980...we should be asking what went right before then!

In anaesthesia we thought we could learn from airlines partly because of this graph. But we forgot what we achieved from 1940 on...

Something new for 1st post here. These few slides from my UCLH colleague @drkevinfong.bsky.social at @rauk.bsky.social ASM in London in 2024 stuck with me.

Improved aircraft safety after 1970, wasn't so much checklists & behavioural change as better digital tech stabilising the aircraft.
