A belated #MathsToday from yesterday: Principles of Data Analysis started working with classification models, so... I asked them about sandwiches.

They all had the same list of 12 food items to start, and then after guessing & refining some definitions, we discussed some additional foods.
Sandwich list of a student who thought BLTs, ice cream waffles, and donuts cut in half and stuffed with cream were sandwiches, and banh mis, multi-layer chip butties, empanadas, burritos, lasagna, tacos, hot dogs, toaster pastries, and frosted cookies were not. An additional list of food items that the students discussed: plain toast, avocado toast, a stack of pancakes, calzone, grilled cheese, cracker & cheese plate, pizza, fluffernutter, ravioli, parfait, and chocolate-covered strawberry, with one student consistently being more inclusive than others. Two student sandwich lists. One student thought BLT, taco, hot dog, ice cream waffle, cream-stuffed donut (cut in 2), banh mi, chip butty, lasagna, and maybe frosted sugar cookies were sandwiches, and toaster pastry, empanada, and burrito were not. The next student thought chip butty, BLT, ice cream waffle, cream-stuffed donut, and banh mi were sandwiches and the others were not.

#MathsToday Principles of Data Analysis sorted some research questions into types, and then based on their sorting, we talked about different statistical learning approaches/methods! (I think I need to vary the language on these a bit more 😅)
Five groups of questions: one about factors affecting something, one about relationships between two things, one about groups or patterns, one about predictions, and one with two questions students weren't sure how to sort. The misfits are "How do we identify handwritten digits as particular numbers?" and "Why are low quality diamonds more expensive?"

A sentimental textbook pick: Chartrand & Zhang's Chromatic Graph Theory. It's part of the story of my 1st paper, it traveled around the world with me, and the first two photos I sent my mom after arriving to my grad school apartment were of (1) my new room and (2) this book in said room (below).

I used to catsit Tulip and her sisters, and I wrote this probability problem about her.
