Nudist historian. Desert-dwelling free-hiking filmmaker dad. Geriatric millennial humanist. Grandson of #RudolphJohnson (pictured). I wear clothes too.

I have projects: @planetnude.co @nakedage.bsky.social @wnrl.bsky.social
Website: www.planetnude.co
And @dieworkwear.bsky.social, if any of this sparks something for you, I’m always happy to share sources or point you toward some archival material. And if the thread itself feels on-brand enough to amplify with a repost, I wouldn’t complain about that either. 9/

A century later, clothing AND nudity shapes identity and visibility and fasion more than ever. When you look back at those early arguments, you can see a parallel narrative to the history of modern dress — a version where the body, not the garment, sets the terms. 8/

Early nudists weren’t against fashion. Many dressed sharply in daily life. They wanted more control over when clothing mattered and when it didn’t. Context sat at the center of the argument. 7/

By the 1920s and ’30s, the movement had spread widely. France tied it to leisure culture. Britain and the U.S. built clubs and campgrounds with a mix of health ideals, New Deal communalism, and DIY energy. Across all of these versions, concerns about modern dress kept resurfacing. 6/

What nudism added was an intellectual shift toward the body itself. Sunbathing, exercise, outdoor time, and swimming without wool suits were framed as practical routines that restored health without adding more demands to daily dress. 5/

Nudism developed alongside other critiques of clothing: dress reform, hygienic clothing, sportswear, Lebensreform. People were trying to reconcile bodies shaped by industry with clothes shaped by new standards of efficiency, propriety, and display. 4/

The first nudist groups weren’t remote communes or the “colonies” of popular myth. Most sat just outside major cities and filled up on weekends with teachers, clerks, urban workers and families. These places offered sun, fresh air, and a break from the expectations that came with modern dress. 3/

At the turn of the century, German reformers saw cities grow denser, factory work expand, and ready-made clothing spread. Heavy garments, stiff collars, soot, and long indoor hours shaped how people felt. Early nudist advocates treated this as a health problem and looked outdoors for relief. 2/

I’ve always thought the early history of nudism would make a great thread for @dieworkwear.bsky.social, mostly because it runs straight through the same forces that reshaped modern clothing in the industrial era. Since it’s a piece of history I work with often, here’s the short version. 1/

“Where are the ‘don’t tread on me’ people” in response to armed federal troops invading American cities?

By my count, two of the original Universal monsters were nudists.

The chill, the sky, the breeze, the grass, etc. feels great on the skin which spends most of its time wrapped up thoroughly in cloth. Here I am.

I may have gone a little overboard putting together Sticker Club style mail packs for each county commissioner, but I really wanted to get their attention

Nudism, to me, represents and symbolizes personal liberty. I love naturism, and that’s mostly what I’m here to talk about, but first and foremost I believe in and promote personal liberty. As such, kings, tyrants, dictators and autocrats, secret police, etc. can piss up a rope and die. #nokings #usa

Do you think the birder was more delighted than the bird was disappointed? Or vice versa?

How do we feel about a naturist symbol that is slightly redesigned for a little bit more balance and visual flow?
