Railroading doesn't just mean bad. Secretly changing the course of the fight so that it goes in a direction YOU have chosen as the DM is literally railroading. Unless you're playing a game that doesn't have set combat rules and guidance and so the DM has wholly invented that stuff.

The resistance rolls are only needed when an enemy has a "big advantage", like you're doing something that is so spooky it's off the scale. Not just any "desperate" action roll. The intent is that those happen when you try to trick an ancient vampire who might feel kind of untrickable kind of thing

I mean Blade is a game where you're often "just deciding" things. If you rob a bank, that's going to have a bigger payout, right? It encourages you every step of the way to stray from the base shit when that makes sense in the fiction.
