The consequences of nuclear testing are not theoretical. Communities around the world, from the Pacific Islands to Central Asia, continue to live with the health, environmental, and economic impacts of past tests. These realities remind us why the global consensus against nuclear testing must hold.

NTI strongly shares this concern. The world has benefited from a sustained moratorium on nuclear testing since the late 1990s, supported by the near-universal adoption of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. Undermining that achievement would not strengthen security; it would erode it.

The crisis was a defining moment in modern history. It was proof that dialogue, restraint, and diplomacy can prevail amid the gravest tensions. Kennedy and Khrushchev chose negotiation over escalation, agreeing to remove nuclear weapons from Cuba and Turkey and opening new communications.
