One time when I was little, my grandma pulled out a big ole dusty bottle of brown Listerine from the back of the cabinet under the sink. She made me use it to cure a sore throat (?)

It got me out of my hometown, where my family had been for 3 generations. It inspired my younger cousins to branch out too
It led me to teach. A year after I graduated, I got to bring my 7th graders on a EOY trip from New Orleans to Boston. It meant so much to see them seeing what was possible

I found community & learned self-reliance. I worked 2-3 jobs the whole time & tried not to compare myself to rich classmates whose parents did their assignments. I found my love of education & public service. I learned a lot & built confidence

Lake Pontchartrain is nice for fishing & the lakefront but scary to drive across. When I first moved here, I had to cross that bridge during a massive thunderstorm in an old Pontiac full of everything I owned. Couldn’t see, winds were pushing my car sideways. I almost turned around & went back to GA
