self-hosting also would most likely mean that some of the 'not blocked' traffic is bots

i run seline.com that's how i know this and done these tests too. a lot of analytics tools are behind a WAF they customize over time, that learns to block bots

and also uBlock blocks even self-hosted analytics

If you want a free one it's GA, Posthog (< 1mil events), or Cloudflare analytics. But these are far from "simple stats" and great experience

If you want a clean UI and privacy-friendly analytics - that's Plausible, seline.com (our tool 🙊), or similar

well, that's the price we have to pay for not compromising privacy..

but i agree with you here, paying this much for a personal website tracking is a bit over the top. that's why our analytics tool seline.so has a free hobby plan just for this ^^
