Not sure I agree that it's vital that California be the rooftop solar leader given that rooftop PV is an expensive and relatively inefficient source of power. People like it, sure, but then they should pay in full for it, no? Why should the state subsidize it? The industry is mature.

But since it's so temperate here and we don't actually heat that much either, the cost per CO2 saved comes out really high. You can see the appeal of offsets...

FWIW I do think the case for a heat pump retrofit in our area is not great -- construction is $$$$, gas is cheap, cooling needs are minimal, etc. One thing your calcs overlook is change in electricity (cleaner in the future) and in gas prices (will grow faster in the future relative to electricity).

Alex, thanks for reading and for your comment. I agree that "drink your own pee" is less accurate than "drink your own treated sewage". But I do think the situation with astronauts is different -- that problem is easier. The sewage contents are less diverse, and the audience is very tech forward!
