A behind-the-scenes perspective on the Nova Scotia Museum’s Archaeology Collection – news, curious artifacts, and more.
The Fort St-Louis project has wrapped for the season! One last photo - here an archaeologist adopts a spring peeper pose to map a feature (also known as archaeology yoga!) @novascotiamuseum.bsky.social @mnhnovascotia.bsky.social @can-arch.bsky.social #archaeology

Finishing up at Fort Saint-Louis with final recording and excavation of the baulks between units. Crew members Liz & Solène record a cellar feature. NSM Curator Kayla Rudderham & Margee Paul of the Sipekneˈkatik Archaeology Training School excavate a baulk @novascotiamuseum.bsky.social #archaeology

Another blue trade bead! And a mini overview of some of the artifacts that we see from Fort St-Louis - fine and utilitarian ceramics, flakes of stone from ballast flint, and some glass wares. All windows into daily life at the fort! #archaeology @novascotiamuseum.bsky.social @can-arch.bsky.social

Last week, the Fort St-Louis crew found a white tin-glazed vessel in one of the units. Initially thought to be a medicine pot, the remnant end of handle suggests that this might be a decorative piece for the table. #archaeology #fieldwork @novascotiamuseum.bsky.social @can-arch.bsky.social

We’re wrapping up a week of public digs at Fort St-Louis. Rained out one day but otherwise a busy schedule of volunteers learning to carefully excavate and identify artifacts @novascotiamuseum.bsky.social @can-arch.bsky.social @somag.bsky.social

Another stellar year for artifacts at Fort St-Louis - here are a few of our highlights thus far, including a green glazed earthenware jar, a tiny early pipe bowl, and a large bit of French tin glazed ceramic #archaeology #CanArch @novascotiamuseum.bsky.social @can-arch.bsky.social

Today we are on site at Fort St-Louis and at the pop up lab space at the Old Courthouse Museum in Barrington, giving the artifacts a good cleaning. Stop by either site for a visit if you’re in the neighbourhood! #archaeology #CanArch @novascotiamuseum.bsky.social @can-arch.bsky.social

Welcome to Caro, a Fleming College museum studies intern, who is helping us work through some @novascotiamuseum.bsky.social archaeology collections projects - including sorting out older collections' inventories. Archaeology isn't only trowels and digging, it's also spreadsheets and counting!

Good news! We've received funding to head back to Fort St-Louis for another season with our community partners. We plan to be on site from mid-June to mid-July. Stay tuned for more information about public digs and events! www.barringtonmuseumcomplex.ca/fort-st-loui...

Behind the scenes as we put the final pieces in place for the new Pjila'si gallery. Amazing to see all the elements coming together (and all the hard work that's bringing it into being). The gallery will open to the public tomorrow (March 7th). @novascotiamuseum.bsky.social

Are we doing Throwback Thursdays over here on Bluesky? Here's a fun photo of me as an undergrad in my Forensic Archaeology field school. I'm in green (trust me), trying to avoid being devoured by blackflies in the woods of Mount Uniacke

Some boldly coloured, sponge-decorated ceramics (mid 1800s) from an incoming collection excavated in North End Halifax. Someone was setting a festive table!
