There is an interesting parallel to make with the pervasiveness of ready-made answers in the public discourse, which explains why the media will always invite a pundit who knows nothing about the subject at hand over an expert whose answer will most of the time be "it's complicated"

Although there's definitely a risk of turning universities into indoctrination centres - by cutting all funding to or outright banning any discipline that displeases the power in place (unlikely in the UK rn but who knows if Farage gets in power)

I wouldn't say it's a matter of "smart people have reasonable political views" as much as "educated people have a better grasp of reality, which is in line with left-wing views" - tons of smart, rich people have unreasonable political views to protect their interests! But do we want this?
