We knocked on doors. We made phone calls. We sent out texts. We talked to literally everyone we could. Now the only thing left to do is vote.

When young leaders like Triston Ezidore step up, it gives me hope for public education’s future. From student body president to the youngest School Board President in the US, and the first Black, gay man to serve on his board, he’s proving what’s possible when lived experience meets purpose.

Flashback — can’t believe it’s been over a decade since I joined the California Faculty Association at Cal State LA.
I’ve made lifelong friends while being part of impactful work. I’m especially grateful for the experiences that led me to serve as Chapter Vice President and Faculty Rights Chair.

The headline is a little overstated. California’s new literacy law doesn’t “change how kids learn to read” overnight, but it does add phonics-based reading training and new K–8 textbooks. Teachers already teach phonics, but there’s often no funding attached for training.

Every year I meet students who are scared to be themselves, and this year that fear feels heavier. The people in power should be protecting them, not making them targets.
National Coming Out Day means standing up for our kids when it’s hardest. I’m not backing down from that.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Casa Fina in LA. Together, we’re building the movement to fully fund our schools, reform standardized testing, expand mental health support, and protect our students from being kidnapped by ICE.

Michael Benjamin’s journey through Sacramento schools to School Board is what public education was meant to create: leaders who give back. A lifelong educator, he’s turned classrooms, barbershops, and neighborhoods into places of hope, building spaces where education meets equity and opportunity.

I am running for State Superintendent because I believe every child deserves a school that truly invests in them, every educator deserves respect and support, and every community deserves a future where public education thrives.

Sacramento, our schools don’t need more career politicians. They need us—students, teachers, and families—shaping schools together.
Join me on Thursday, Sept 25 at 6 PM at Tap Wine Lounge (1011 Del Paso Blvd) for a community meet & greet with Dr. Flo Cofer, Dr. Susan Olsen, and other local leaders.

This campaign is about teachers, students, and families shaping the future of our schools together, not career politicians imposing what they think is best. See you there!
