In spite of these shifts, bareback subculture is far from dead. Unlimited Intimacy approached unprotected sex in subcultural terms because I saw value in describing a set of erotic practices less as individual choices than as socially organized behaviour, with a meaningfulness that exceeds any particular participant. Diego Semerene begins his contribution to Raw by claiming that "the majority of early barebacking scholarship has assumed it to be a subcultural practice." But, in fact, I wrote Unlimited Intimacy because none of the existing scholarship assumed barebacking was a subcultural practice. The choice not to use a condom has tended to be understood in individualized terms- usually as an individual's failure and I wanted to question that.

This is from Tim Dean’s afterword to Raw. If i had written one of the essays in the collection i’m not sure how i’d keep living after reading this.
When framed in such terms, the question motivating many of these essays-_how queer is bareback now?_ appears misplaced. That was a question I tried to avoid in Unlimited Intimacy by approaching barebacking with judgment suspended. It seemed to me then, and still does now, that deciding whether bareback sex is progressive or conservative, radical or compromised, queer or otherwise makes it too easy to elide the complexity of the phenomenon. The common human impulse to mark potentially disturbing behaviour as good or bad- to simplify it by either identifying with or violently disidentifying from it- shuts down thought.
