My tribe, the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island successfully gained federal recognition status, as it was officially acknowledged 42 years ago today (April 11, 1983), approximately a century after the Rhode Island General Assembly illegally 'detribalized' the Narragansett.

Not enough true understanding. The word, in and of itself, was never offensive. Perhaps it the context in which it was used that was suggestively offensive. But that can be done to almost every word.

The Brown Tree, an Oak Tree named as such for the 3 Brown sisters (Myra, Alice aka Nina and Grace) of Rhode Island's Narragansett tribe.
The 3 sisters fed family at the Narragansett tribe's August Meeting Powwow on the tribe’s reservation in Charlestown, Rhode Island. My family is Oak Tree Clan.

My Grand Uncle, Twice won the Boston Marathon, played a role in the 'Heartbreak Hill' nickname, competed in the 1936 Olympics in Hitler's Germany on the same U.S. team as Jesse Owens. Inducted into the American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame in 1973. My Grandma's little brother.
