FWIW, I've had multiple conversations with Jimmy about the founder/co-founder debate more than 15 years ago. He was moderately annoyed by the whole thing but mostly, really, didn't care and found it tiresome. @hankgreen.bsky.social

Even betting on your team to *win* is worse than taking PEDs.

Chalamet is the Mordechai/Wyatt Earp character in a corrupt Tombstone-like town run by an absentee mayor (Achashverosh). He appoints a chancellor (Hamas) to oversee the administration of the town, who in turn bilks everyone via corrupt casino games and a protection racket.

So are you saying, "I'm so excited!"?

It also gives Senate Dems another arrow in a future shutdown fight

Yeah, Nolan McLean got some votes this year and is still eligible for next

Doesn't help that it's November and also that the world is a dumpster fire

Why not? It's what Trump is asking for.

The idea was to turn the subsidies into "cash" that could be use for healthcare expenses. If the money offset the full amount of the subsidies, it'd appear neutral to most voters. But it would come in the form of a check from Trump.
November 10, 2025 at 3:11 PM
No -- I think Democrats will keep trying to get the ACA subsidy reinstated over and over again from now through the midterms. It will keep coming back up, and the GOP will keep looking cruel.
November 10, 2025 at 2:34 PM
A lot of things were breaking badly. SNAP meant real suffering. Air travel impacts over the holidays are catastrophic. If the GOP blew up the filibuster, the Democrats are done. If Thune's FSA idea came through, the ACA turns into a winning issue for the GOP.
November 10, 2025 at 2:32 PM
The Rs already have shown that they won't negotiate. And voters have shown that they'll punish Rs for that.

I don't think Dems have a path to a real policy win in this environment -- and that's tragic. Dems *do* have a path to political wins, though, as a result.

Re #1, memories fade. I don't think a lot of voters, in November 2026, are going to say "my flight home for Thanksgiving 2025 was cancelled so I'm now voting Democrat."

#2, I fully agree -- they won't. That's going to help Democrats get voters, though, as Republicans will again own the ACA issue
November 10, 2025 at 2:28 PM
The continuing resolution only goes through January 2026, I thought?
November 10, 2025 at 2:25 PM
Two (honest) questions:

1) What benefit does "driving down Trump's number and provoking GOP infighting" have now, with no election for another year?

2) Will the Democrats be able to recreate the same effect again in January? The spring? The run-up to the midterms?
November 10, 2025 at 2:20 PM
Re: your last point, voters aren't going blame Dems.

The ACA subsidies issue will come up again before the midterms, and closer to when people actually vote. And the GOP will still be obstinate.

On the other hand, if Thune's FSA idea went through, it could have been a disaster for Dems.

We need a big free agent signing, stat.

The Democrats handed the Republicans a gift with this shutdown -- they could have ended it quickly by reinstating ACA subsidies and been the heroes of affordability. The GOP didn't take the gift. Instead, they doubled down on policies that make life less affordable.
November 10, 2025 at 1:27 PM
One practical minor gain — undid the October RIF and protected against future ones. Most of the real gains are political. Wipeout election in 2025, keeps ACA subsidies as a political win going forward, avoids getting blame for air travel issues. Also keeps SNAP out of SCOTUS’s hands.
November 10, 2025 at 12:38 PM
This was my reaction, too. This issue is going to come up again and again through the midterms.
