Soon, skaters were starting, turning and stopping like never before. In later versions, like you see here, the blade could be screwed to the bottom of the skate. The skates were wildly successful and Starr continued to produce skates until the 1930s.

That all changed in the 1860s when John Forbes, a young employee at the newly formed Starr Manufacturing Company in Dartmouth, invented the Starr “Acme Club” spring skate. The skates attached to a skater’s boots with a mechanical lever. #Dartmouth

Directions
Mix flour, salt & baking powder. Cream together butter, shortening & sugar. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk. Pour batter into greased tube pan. Bake at 325F for 1 ½ hours. Cool in pan for 15 min then cool on rack.

6 extra large eggs

The Senior Ladies in the community came together to create a cookbook. They had hundreds of recipes to choose from and only picked the best ones for the cookbook. Each lady had a recipe for a pound cake but they all picked Nan’s as their favourite.

The Mi’kmaw community of Turtle Grove was struck by the full force of the 1917 Halifax Harbour Explosion. This table, donated to the museum in 2019 survived the destruction at Turtle Grove. #HalifaxExplosion

News of the disaster reached the city of Boston the same morning. That night a train loaded with supplies & volunteers left for Halifax. #HalifaxExplosion

Rescue began quickly with troops & naval strength. City officials arranged volunteers and relief committees were formed that day. #HalifaxExplosion
