It’s always amazing to me that so many endangered species have the word “common” in their name.

Really hammers home how quickly these conservation crises can arise. These animals were common as recently as when we were naming stuff!

In the UK it’s more normal.

🚨 IUCN just rejected a moratorium on genetically engineered species — by one government vote.

Governments: 49.71% yes / 50.29% no
NGOs and IPLCs: 55.75% yes / 44.25% no

Over 100 scientists warned of irreversible ecological risks, but precaution lost to belief in risky technologies.

Moratorium(4 yrs) on intro of genetically engineered organisms into wild defeated by one vote!

Even though we had majority of votes, for motions to pass at IUCN World Congress you need to win both government and NGO categories. We lost the governments vote by one!

Can’t get closer than that.

This creed hasn’t changed: man above beasts, profit above life. We still trade extinction for “growth,” still justify destruction as destiny. This isn’t fringe—it’s mainstream, rooted in 10,000 years of monotheistic dominion.
This was written in 1879, just a few years before passenger pigeons disappeared from the wild. These people are still out there

Nature is not a lab! #IUCN2025 9–15 Oct is debating genetic engineering as a “conservation tool.”
But release of GMOs has major risks!
⚠️ They cannot be recalled
⚠️ Potential harm unpredictable & irreversible.

Adaptability keeps species alive….until there’s nowhere left to adapt to. Desert lions turned to the sea to survive, but as oceans empty, that refuge will fade. Flexibility means nothing without biodiversity.

“Though the wolves are kept in captivity with no plans yet for release, Matt James, Colossal’s chief animal officer, worries the moratorium, if passed, would make it harder to build public and financial support for “de-extinction” efforts.”
