A perfect encapsulation of why Arab and Muslim Americans are disillusioned with the Democratic Party and US politics in general: A man filmed in several videos harassing and threatening halal food trucks around NYC was Obama’s on an entire region of Muslim-majority countries.

When we talk about newsroom diversity, this is why. Fundamental misunderstanding of what شهيد or martyr means in Palestinian and in fact Arab culture. This is also why we need to talk about intersectionality, because PoC that are part of one community cannot speak for all minoritized groups.

The Arab American vote is spread out across several key states incl. PA, MN, MI. The white supremacist history that informed the classification of Arabs as white continues to render the group invisible, limiting systematic polling of this voting block. Still, it’s impact can be felt.
