this is not entirely correct but your sentiment is valid. the people running the food banks *are* employees, but everyone else is a volunteer. while they’re not formally businesses, they do get donations and funding that goes towards paying the executive staff. non-profits aren’t 100% volunteer-run.

to get government funding, food banks can’t do hot meals. hot meal services are not eligible for funding.

i think it’s perfectly fine to prioritize employing younger people. you cannot help everyone at once and you shouldn’t seek to. identifying a group in need and centering them is ideal.

there are tons of ways to get young people to get involved. doing recruiting at high schools and colleges for one, posting job listings in places frequented by younger people, and asking for references from young people already employed. it’s not as hard as it may seem to you.

i tell people that i’m not interested after the first message. most of them thank me.
