Newham educator.
Agreed. Both are bullies, desperate to impress, and both lack any hint of empathy.
The mystery is that so many people either don’t see that or don’t care.

What happened to the perceptive, witty, thought-provoking Shrimsley?
Could somebody please send the intern who is subbing for him back to the Telegraph.

Why do you describe the billionaires’ press as MSM?

They gave up the pretence long ago. Why give them credibility they don’t deserve?

Don’t feel too bad. I took my wife to a Stromae concert one year early. Six months later it was cancelled anyway.

It’s good. But far from comprehensive.
Very little in there about one of the key drivers towards the possible return of sink schools: the lack of effective regulation of unethical practices by schools. Plus other negative effects of fragmentation of the system.

Or maybe he is drifting further and further towards Reform because he thinks he still has a future in politics, and that’s the only future for current Tory MPs.

Disagree.
Complete Russian withdrawal from Ukraine is good for Russia and Ukraine. Just maybe not for Putin.

As set out in Sam’s book, lack of long term planning means greater expenditure for worse outcomes.

Young people are sent away from their area to expensive private provision because of lack of investment in local provision to meet their needs.

Sadly, as with PFI, funds are being diverted from state school budgets into substantial profits for private investors.

In Newham ideological opposition to special schools led to huge sums being spent on sending pupils out of borough.

Unsurprisingly, tech billionaires, for various reasons, including the fact that they tend to be very good at learning by themselves, usually completely ignore the second point.

What did we learn from lockdown?
That we are far, far away from technology being able to compensate for the loss of in-person learning.
And we should always bear in mind that most children learn socially - not just from the teacher but from being part of a shared learning experience.

Always ahead of the game, Martin!

One thing that hasn't changed about Labour since 1997 - the failure to achieve the credit for genuine achievements.

London schools improved massively between 1997 and 2007 - but that was never firmly established in public perception.

Completely agree, Leora. There is a precious opportunity here to build a more coherent system, which will help everyone working in state education and better serve our pupils.

Fascinating - almost as if someone had realised that the school system was far too fragmented.

Some great work at the ESFA, and hope initiatives such as SRMAs can be sustained, but this is an important step towards a more coherent, less confusing system.
