These questions reflect a misunderstanding of the nature of slow genocide and a naive notion of how humans cope with ongoing catastrophe. 5/6 Continuing to live in the shadow of genocide does not negate its occurrence, but rather confirms its cruelty. When people are forced to live in nothingness, this is neither a luxury nor a denial, but a defense and survival mechanism. 6/6

What is happening in Gaza resembles the "slow" patterns of genocide witnessed in Darfur and elsewhere: a continuous, protracted, and multifaceted pattern, where life gradually erodes under the weight of blockade, bombardment, starvation, and the total collapse of all means of survival. 2/6 In such contexts, society does not progress from disaster to recovery, but rather first goes through a phase of "painful adjustment." Individuals and communities adapt to a reduced level of safety, services, and livelihood, continuing their lives within an abnormal reality that has become the norm 3/6 Therefore, some of the questions asked by friends outside Gaza-such as: "How do you continue to work? Are weddings still held? How do people dance at weddings? Do girls go to beauty salons?" 4/6
