I feel naive for not even considering that. I assumed it was *just* for invading privacy and reducing mailroom staff. Increasing revenue but not as a stream itself.

Unlike the measures during the pandemic, this isn’t in service of keeping people safe. This just makes prison more damaging to the prisoners through a nightmare of deprivation.

I work as a mail carrier and was shocked when I learned this was the norm at a prison I deliver to in rural Maryland. It made me think about talking to people who had to say goodbye to dying relatives during the pandemic via iPad. Dehumanizing doesn’t begin to describe it.

It’s scapegoating. It’s having gaming inserted into the conversation by people who don’t understand it and have no interest in understanding it. Gene Park and Jason Schreier shouldn’t be the only people I can think of who write for a publication people over 50 would recognize and respect.

It’s not that it would be a games journalist’s job to “cover the subculture of nihilistic young men” it’s that having someone at the times with an interest or expertise in a subculture being scapegoated would be better than there being no one on the payroll pushing back.

Saw the Shin Godzilla rerelease last night and man, a movie about a government made up of weak men more afraid of upsetting the electorate and breaking from procedure than letting a literal monster kill people felt pertinent.
