Here's a quite large pastel drawing done sitting on the river bank at Byron's Pool, Trumpington Cambridge. Byron is said to have swum here. Perhaps his anarchic spirit was at work.

suspecting another advantage to viewing sin as bondage

is that it reveals its structure

a structure that a purely moral view (perhaps deliberately) keeps hidden

by seeing sin as vice

which focuses attention on the sinner, away from the conditions that make particular sins possible

During his stay in the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, Van Gogh painted Irises.
Blue petals swirl around a single white bloom, repetition giving way to individuality.
Order and impulse find harmony in brushstroke and color.

Monet once confessed he could never finish a painting—“I stop when I’m tired.” Each canvas was a moment, not a conclusion.

Monet’s Camille on Her Deathbed (1879) was never shown publicly in his lifetime. He kept it hidden in his Giverny studio, seen only by family and close friends.

After his death in 1926, it passed through his estate—today it hangs in the Musée d’Orsay, Paris. 💔
