If you want schlock Re-Animator will give you all you want and more. There’s as much bad to say as good, but I still love every second. This is the 40th anniversary and if you're into physical media you can get this amazing anniversary edition. I hope you enjoy and we’ll see you next year! (9/9)

Most of the acting in Re-Animator ranges from bad to forgettable. David Gale as Dr. Carl Hill, West’s foil, is the only other stand out. As bad as the rest of the cast is, the scenes between Herbert West and Dr. Hill are tense, creepy, and superb. It almost feels like two different movies. (8/9)

The practical effects in Re-Animator manage to be both terrible and horrifying. The cat sequence is the perfect example of this. At no point during the entire struggle with West’s first failed resurrection does the cat look even remotely real, but it still manages to creep you the fuck out. (7/9)

Despite the humorous failures, Jeffrey Combs instills Herbert West with such an arrogance that the movie still nails the commentary on science. Combs is one of the best things to come from Gordon's Lovecraft era. Bonus rec: watch Combs play Lovecraft in the 1993 anthology film Necronomicon. (6/9)

“Herbert West–Reanimator” is set in Arkham, but it isn’t a mythos story. It is really just Lovecraft retelling Frankenstein. Lovecraft's horrifying monster gods out in space are swapped out for petty humans with no regard for others trying to play god. (5/9)

Wow, here we are in the last days of this year's #Hauntalong. Time sure flies when you’re being spooky! Thanks all for reading along. I hope you found some groovy horror films to make your Spooky Season better! I’m closing up my contribution with Stuart Gordon’s 1985 classic Re-Animator! (1/9)

You can tell the script is by Tarantino, full of profanity, obscenity, and quick dialog. If Tarantino isn't your flavor it probably won't be even with vampires. But if Rodriguez, Tarantino, and Kurtzman teaming up to make a trashy Vampire western sounds fun then From Dusk till Dawn delivers. (10/10)

Also of note is the set design. Really, the one set but it is a doozie. The Titty Twister is half Aztec ruin half strip club and it is gorgeous. As we get introduced to the cast of characters take a few moments to pause the movie and just take in the incredible work that went into this set. (8/10)

If you’ve read my past reviews, you might be asking “what about the practical effects?” (You weren’t and that’s okay.) Let’s talk about them. The vampire make-up is incredible. It draws on Aztec myth and imagery to create unique snake-like vampires that look as amazing as they are horrifying. (6/10)

Then the vampires show up. There are few sequences that can stand up to the introduction of Salma Hayek as Santanico Pandemonium. The acting, the music, the choreography, the costume design. Incredible. A sudden bar fight leads Santanico to transform into vampire and all hell breaks loose. (5/10)

The Geckos leave a trail of bodies in their wake as we learn Seth got busted out of jail by his brother Richie. In a bid to get across the border they take a family hostage led by Jacob wearing a white dad hat. It all goes south when they end up at a strip club called the Titty Twister. (2/10)

It is a fact long held that in a western the bad guys wear black hats. In Robert Rodriguez’s 1996 vampire flick, From Dusk till Dawn, the Gecko brothers trade black hats for black suits but Rodriguez wastes no time in proving that they are BAD. (1/10)

Ingrid Torelli as Lilly and David Dastmalchian as Jack Delroy are particular stand outs. Lilly’s shifts between naïve sweetness and horrifying evil are a delight and Jack's desperation and sadness are palpable. If you are a fan of possession horror, give Late Night with the Devil a try. (7/7)

I’ve said it before, but I’m a sucker for practical effects and that is the other thing Late Night does well. There are some really great practical effects from demon makeup to black bile to a body full of worms that are gnarly in the best possible way. (5/7)

I think what makes the movie really special is that it does A LOT with very little. It is an incredibly claustrophobic set. A majority of the film is set on the filming stage and the small slice of backstage just behind the curtains. (3/7)

That leads to a late night show with a psychic, a skeptic, and a child who was the sole survivor of a satanic cult. The skeptic is there to debunk the strange claims of the other guests, but has a hard time of it when they introduce Lilly, the former cultists, and her friend Mr. Wriggles. (2/7)

I'm reading through the Blades '68 playtest from @olddog.games and @evilhat.bsky.social. "Trouble engine" is such a great name for game tech. Beyond being fun to say, ritualizing the GM book keeping in BitD is a great idea. I think it will make bringing the world to life a lot easier for the GM.

Playing some Wicked Congregation by @danielhkwan.itch.io for @stabilityor.bsky.social! This is a really cool solo game if you are looking for a spooky journaling game.

I got to spend the weekend before my 40th birthday watching some of my favorite Universal Monsters on a drive-in screen with some of my closest friends. As I celebrate my birthday, proper, I'm in awe of how lucky I am to be surrounded by so many awesome people.

A few bonus amazing bad movies: Cocaine Crabs from Outer Space, Ouija Shark 1 and 2, and Dinosaurs in a Mining Facility. Keep an eye on #hauntalong for a few more recommendations before the end of Spooky Season! /end

It understands its influences, which are myriad. Teen horror (I Was a Teenage Werewolf), high school scare films (Reefer Madness) and teen nostalgia (Grease). It wraps them all up with some ludicrous moments (just wait for the last 20 minutes) and makes a madcap movie worth checking out. /8

There are a bunch of adult actors playing teens. There is some truly brilliant low budget costuming and some intentionally bad costuming. There’s a musical number and multiple original songs. Wereskunk isn't a good movie, but it doesn’t try to be, and it's a very entertaining 90 minutes of film /7
October 28, 2024 at 5:36 PM
So with that in mind, this week I’m going to talk very briefly about I Was a Teenage Wereskunk. This 2016 low budget flick was written and directed by Neal McLaughlin. It has everything that makes for an entertaining bad horror movie. /6

All movies with barebones budgets, often made over the course of years, using ingenuity and passion to create absolute masterpieces. The movies making waves in the past decade have been movies made by people who love and understand the genre, even when they try to deviate from genre conventions. /4

I don’t have a lot to say about this week’s move specifically, but I want to say something about horror in general first. The path of horror history has been paved by low-budget passion projects. Night of the Living Dead. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Eraserhead, Evil Dead. /2
