@futurebird Some of them become docents at train museums, and I met one who was determined to tell us everything he knew.

@volts.wtf It took off during COVID, when people really needed the service. It is a much worse business now unless the company can underpay both their delivery people and the restaurants. Better for those of us who aren't housebound to place to-go orders and pick it up (and perhaps do the same […]

@Holberg Death caps resemble an edible southeast Asian mushroom, and when Vietnamese refugees first came to the US in the 70s and 80s there were quite a few cases of death cap poisoning. I think word got out so I haven't heard of such cases recently, but the park where I serve as a volunteer […]

@sundogplanets I need to go to New Zealand. Even more so after following the wonderful @georgepenney .

@Nonilex He realized that he can just order the government to pay him.

@heidilifeldman California passed a similar law, effective Jan 1, 2026. But the feds have sued and as far as I know it isn't being enforced for now. The LA County sheriff's department said they won't enforce it until the court fights are over.

@lillyfinch This is misattributed. Heather Cox Richardson didn't say it. Though it is true.

@skinnylatte In the old days all the transit agencies acted like they were defending their turf, and they seemed to deliberately make things hard if you needed to use more than one (say, a bus to BART). Schedules just wouldn't match up.

That's not unique to here. Back in the 90s and 00s I had a […]

@skinnylatte I agree that the mess we have falls far short of real transit. But I've lived in the bay area for 40+ years, and it used to be so, so much worse.
January 25, 2026 at 4:04 AM
@skinnylatte Clipper is better than what we had before. There are 20+ different transit agencies and they were all incompatible. Now if you're taking public transit from the South Bay, there's one payment method to deal with for VTA (buses and light rail in Santa Clara County), Caltrain, BART […]

@isotope239 It is possible that this is a concerted effort by right wing activists to get them flagged as spam: get lots of prescriptions from many accounts and then flag them as spam, so Google gets thousands of spam reports.

@Nonilex I don't get why Trump has multiple illegally appointed attorneys. He has a Senate majority, he should be able to get approval for almost anyone he chooses and there isn't a filibuster for appointments.
January 21, 2026 at 4:04 AM
@gottalaff.bsky.social It only takes a few GOP dissenters to join Democrats and start restraining Trump. The House majority is paper thin. The Senate is more of a problem, but even there there are signs that some have had enough. There isn't enough for impeachment and conviction, but maybe there […]

@alexblock This isn't a vote. It is an ad. They are advertising that on DuckDuckGo you can turn the AI summaries on or off. They aren't going to get rid of it entirely no matter how people vote.

@counseloroh.bsky.social They didn't pass over Machado because Trump didn't get the prize. They kidnapped Maduro and left. Installing anyone else other than his VP would have taken massive resources and a military occupation to enforce. Saying that honestly would not appeal to Trump, so rather […]

@Nonilex He clearly doesn't have the power to do this, his lusting after Greenland is not an emergency so he has no legal basis. I hope importers promptly sue and get an injunction.

All his is doing is forcing Europe to decouple their economy from the US as quickly as possible, at which point […]

@timbray Yes, that's how it would work out, and it's a reasonable outcome. The Bsky bridge is another issue, but instances could choose to block a particular account without blocking the bridge as a whole.

@heidilifeldman I heard an interview on public radio with an expert on Venezuela yesterday, sorry, I don't remember names. There were two rounds of nationalizion, one in 1976, and another in the 1990s under Hugo Chavez. In the first one, the oil companies were paid compensation, which was paid […]

@Holberg But he didn't take over Venezuela. American troops kidnapped the president, but they left his VP, his party and the military in charge. Attempting to really grab a country would look much more like the Iraq war: they captured Saddam, but surprise, people didn't greet us as liberators […]

@paninid I never use the self-checkout because an experienced person is better at scanning and bagging my stuff than I am, so it doesn't take longer. Also, I'd rather protect their jobs than have everything go the self-checkout route.

@gottalaff.bsky.social I think it is because he is at least somewhat aware of his own cognitive decline, so he keeps talking about the (easy) tests to reassure himself. Part of the denial.
