In situ photos (like this from Kapp Olsen) are very helpful for interpreting and verifying what we see in satellite imagery.

Good morning from the #BarentsSea ice edge! Northerly winds continue to push the #seaice edge southward. Fishing activity is high in this productive zone, rich in marine life. As the ice moves southward, so do the vessels, staying clear of the thicker ice to the north 🧊

#Svalbard #seaice area on 22 Apr 2025: 464,807 km², 66,329 km² above the 1991–2020 average. Lots of (mostly thin) ice around now, despite record lows earlier this year, showing how fast things shift. Wind/ direction, ocean currents, waves & temp all play a role. Prolonged northerly winds especially!

Sea ice has lingered around Bjørnøya for about two weeks now. Frequent northerly winds have moved the ice southward and helped it persist, keeping the island cold. April temps on Bjørnøya are ~3°C below the 1991–2020 average as of April 22nd.
