Finding true love and conjugal bliss was a stroke of luck as rare as a blind cat running across a dead mouse. There was only so much deep affection in the world. Madmen claimed some, and fools claimed some more. How could the handful of leftovers be enough for everyone to share? A pair like Prince Yan and Gu Yun were truly a rare sight. The two of them didn’t flaunt their feelings around others, but Shen Yi understood Gu Yun. If Gu Yun could let go, he would never have overstepped the line of their godfather-godson relationship. The very thought alarmed Shen Yi. His mother hen instincts flared again. “Zixi,” he began quietly, “I’m not trying to curse you. But have you considered what you’ll do if something comes between the two of you in the future?” Gu Yun was silent for a long while. This time, he didn’t dodge the subject. Not until they had nearly reached the rear courtyard did Gu Yun finally speak, his voice so low as to be nearly inaudible. “I have. I don’t know.” For once, Shen Yi didn’t know what to say. The grandest declaration of love in the world would have been less shocking to him than these five words.

Gu Yun stepped inside and hung the flowering branch in Chang Geng’s bed curtain. “The osmanthus are blooming. I didn’t want you to feel too cooped up lying inside—is the scent okay?” Chang Geng’s gaze attached itself to Gu Yun and refused to tear itself away. Gu Yun met his eyes. “What are you looking at?” Chang Geng reached out to tug at his clothes. Worried he’d strain his wounds, Gu Yun hurriedly cooperated and leaned down. “Don’t flail around!” Chang Geng’s pull was insistent, gripping Gu Yun’s robes and drawing him close. “Zixi, it hurts.” After a lengthy pause, Gu Yun said expressionlessly, “Get out of here; I’m not falling for that anymore.” Since his injury, it seemed Prince Yan had no intention of preserving any dignity around Gu Yun. Whenever they were alone, he’d pipe up with an It hurts, kiss me any chance he got. But bad habits, if indulged, would only get worse. This piece of wisdom always held true. Gu Yun flicked his forehead with a finger, then turned to go change.

Chang Geng turned away with difficulty. He seemed to struggle with himself for a time. He quietly said, “Yifu, I want you.” For a moment, Gu Yun thought his ears had acquired some new affliction. “What did you say?” Chang Geng didn’t repeat himself. His ears went red, and he glanced evasively toward Gu Yun, eyes burning with desire as they tried to burrow their way under Gu Yun’s snowy white collar. No matter how much of a playboy Gu Yun might be, he played in the normal way. When it came to those kinds of matters, he maintained the decadent customs of noble sons—he was particular about such elegant aesthetics as “amidst flowers and beneath the moon,” and “where water flows, a channel forms.” He honestly couldn’t comprehend such interests as would lead one to insist on calling someone Yifu in bed or to go into heat after receiving a beating. Scalp prickling, he thought to himself, He really is off his rocker. He pointed at the tent’s door and said simply, “Out.” Loath to delay his work, Chang Geng suppressed his endless thirst and cast Gu Yun one last secretive and embarrassed look. Then he smoothed his turbulent emotions into calm and fled.

He regarded himself as a bundle of fireworks—by the time he fizzled out, he would have successfully upheld the Gu family’s reputation for devotion and sacrifice. But when it had truly come down to it, Chang Geng had appeared out of thin air and, with a slap of his hand, sent Gu Yun’s plans spinning away from their original trajectory. Gu Yun couldn’t help but indulge in wild fantasies and yearn for more—after wearing himself down for the sake of the nation, he wanted to give what remained of his hale and hearty years to Chang Geng.

Don’t you know the saying, ‘A gentleman does not stand beneath a crumbling wall’?”11 Listening from the side, Shen Yi wished he could blush on Marshal Gu’s behalf. Look how righteous he sounded scolding others—as if he had nothing to do with smuggling violet gold himself! Chang Geng didn’t become upset or argue back. He merely looked at Gu Yun with the ghost of a smile, the words, I know what you’ve been up to, but I won’t expose you before an audience, written plainly on his face. Gu Yun flinched in surprise; he instantly caught the meaning of that look. What, this little bastard is even investigating me now? Chang Geng pressed Gu Yun’s hand back down. “Yifu, don’t get angry yet. Let me finish.” When Chang Geng laid his well-formed hand over Gu Yun’s own, his palm was warm and his touch gentle, as if he were holding a baby bird. He let go at once, but for some reason, the whole interaction felt strange. Gu Yun was suddenly a bit awkward. Between close friends and brothers, embraces, joining hands, horseplay—even a kiss or two was unremarkable. Military officers didn’t care for meaningless etiquette, and the rank and file cared even less. But…this gesture was really too clingy. Gu Yun’s fingers twitched, and he forgot what he was about to say.
