We were a more exciting team in Xhaka’s last season and also in Rice’s first. These were obviously Arteta teams - and with many of the same personnel. So I think it’s Mikel favouring control over risk taking and as things stand it’s not noticeably improved us, just made us less attractive to watch.

I don’t think it’s conjugate though - the play feels far more systemic than ever. Players are fulfilling their roles in a system that logic dictates should produce positive outcomes. But there’s no flair, audacity and I feel individuals’ characters/skills are being lost to this mechanised procedure.
