At University of Cambridge, I was asked if I maintain a sense of optimism about climate change. My answer:

Yes, because unlike cancer, where we often don't know the cause and don't have a cure, we know exactly why global temperatures are rising and how to stop it. We just need the political will.

A constant reminder that even if CO₂ emissions decreased annually as much as they did during the pandemic lockdown from now to 2030, we still wouldn't meet our emission target to keep global warming below 1.5°C.

How Marine Carbon Removal Is Governed in the High Seas
The ocean plays a key role in regulating our climate, absorbing 30% of carbon dioxide emissions and 90% of excess heat. With scientific consensus that carbon dioxide removal is needed to complement de...

The applied biogeochemistry group on some non scientific mountaineering upon Collins Bonnet in beautiful Tasmania. Since all we do is marine, we thought would be nice to go the other direction for a change.

Even among marine biogeochemists, I would say there are only a handful worldwide that truly understand "alkalinity" (@agdco2.bsky.social is one and you should follow him), so it's always astounding to me that we're all now using the term casually like this. 🌊

Our student's last outing before Christmas (not that it's a holiday here!), a long day spent setting up their latest Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement tests, this time using the OAEPIIP design from @bachlennart.bsky.social

🧵In the newly published Best Practices Guide to Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) Research, we make recommendations for monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV), the multistep process to quantify the amount of CO₂ removed by OAE, a promising CO₂ removal technique. 1/5
