I have declared it a cocktail for Christmas

We actually also did cut the AC and slowed down, we just did it all at once so couldn’t tell if any one thing was working 😅 thanks for the tips!

I want sooooo badly for EVs to be the best choice for everyone. But realistically, right now, they won’t work for a lot of people’s needs and wants, and that’s morally neutral

I’m hopeful, though!

But does that outweigh the inconvenience we’re dealing with here? In the long run, yeah.

But this is also why incentives like tax credits are good too. We can’t brow beat people because it’s “the right thing to do for the environment”
November 27, 2024 at 4:09 AM
Imo we aren’t going to get people to broadly switch to EVs by lying about the experience.

We have to do everything we can to make it a GOOD experience. Our car is a beautiful computer on wheels, and fun to drive

I think it’s important as liberals to be honest about this stuff. EV has so far to go, and we made choices with our eyes wide open that there would be a learning curve and inconveniences

You have to have a sense of humor about it because it’s kind of fucking annoying!

2 months into EV ownership, lots still to learn! 🚙🪫⚡️🔋🧲

Anyway we made it. Feeling silly and bad for being late, but there’s no way to really know all this without going through it

The delta slowed then eventually reversed, and we surmised there’s probably a buffer built into the UI for big dummies like us who didn’t know not to trust the range
November 27, 2024 at 3:53 AM
The delta keeps shrinking, we decide to turn off the audio and dim the display and I helpfully nag Matt by saying “DRIVE MORE EFFICIENTLY”

We start going into panic mode — could we make it to our final stop (5 mi closer)? Do we have the right cables to get residential power? We’ve never done that!
November 27, 2024 at 3:50 AM
We’re still in beta mode of EV infrastructure so of course the nearest charger that we’re reasonably sure will work is about 35 miles away, about 5 miles from our final destination
November 27, 2024 at 3:47 AM
So we thought we’d roll into our destination with about 50-60 miles to spare, at about 20%

About 40 miles out we realized the delta between “miles to go” and “estimated range” is rapidly shrinking
November 27, 2024 at 3:46 AM
But what no one ever made clear to us is how wildly that varies on an EV, seemingly with the biggest factor being temperature
November 27, 2024 at 3:43 AM
So when you’re in a gas/hybrid car you’re looking at a mileage range that we all know varies based on driving efficiency, but in my experience that doesn’t change by more than maybe 10-20 miles and obviously highway driving is way more efficient.
