Hi Reem,
I did not even notice this! I love how the artist used even the smallest detail to explore fast fashion and consumerism.

Angel Benton's work demonstrated the evolution in my understanding of what constitutes "art." Prior expanding my beliefs, I may not have taken the time to experience the installation's radical artistic message. But during my most recent visit, I spent nearly half an hour with the art.

However, after taking a course on contemporary art, I learned that craftsmanship is not what defines an artwork. Instead, I have come to understand that it's the abstract concepts like intention, meaning, and symbolism that truly matter.

With my background in creating and consuming predominantly traditional art, I used to lack appreciation for non-traditional contemporary works.

This installation reminded me of one of the first lessons I learned about contemporary art during my journey this quarter. In "Art Words and Art-works," Gilda Williams explained that anything can be art, not because of its craftsmanship, but because of its "radical artistic meaning."

I enjoyed this installation because it felt like stepping into another person's life. I got to explore their history through children's books and nostalgic items, their interests in clothes, books, instruments, and trinkets, and their Cambodian roots as I spent time in the "room".

Transforming a corner of the art gallery into an immersive experience, the artist recreated a room with elements of Cambodian heritage and life as a college student/young adult, presumably reflecting the artist's own experiences.

I am curious why this is. Could it be egocentrism? A desire to feel acknowledged? A response to societal alienation and interpersonal disconnection?

...

Thoughts?

I believe this feature also represents a broader theme I've observed through my experiences with contemporary art: people want to see themselves reflected in the art they observe.

I enjoyed this feature of the book, as it presented a unique opportunity for self-reflection. I felt that among the extinct flowers included, I most resonated with the Taihaku Cherry Blossom, followed by the Chocolate Cosmos.

This piece also had an interactive component, as each of the flowers was "assigned a personality" that observers could choose based on which one they resonated with or found most attractive.

My favorite component of this piece was the message spelled out on the keyboard: "Buy anything you want, someone else will pay!" This statement represents a manifesto for the future that Hans Ulrich Obrist, and I, associate with contemporary art.

The meaning of this piece lay in its details. For example, the reconstructed MacBook computer symbolized to me the pinnacle of consumerism: our "beloved" Apple ecosystem.

This work by a DU senior student caught my attention. This multimedia piece criticized the ethical malpractice of fast fashion, highlighting the popular website SHEIN.

Many of the pieces in these collections also resonated with one of my favorite analogies for contemporary art, posited by Hans Ulrich Obrist, who compared "contemporary" works to manifestos for the future.

Beyond its relevance to my personal experiences, all of the works in these collections align with Peter Schjeldahl's simple definition of contemporary art: art that one can experience within one's lifetime.

The galleries contain art that is "contemporary," especially in its relevance to my experiences as a DU student and a soon-to-be college graduate.

Hi @ckikut.bsky.social,
I think it is so interesting that you also felt like this chair looked like bird feathers. In my post about "Bajio," I mentioned that I thought it looked like red blood cells. Nature really has a tendency to replicate itself.

Museums like the Denver Selfie Museum feel like an interesting example of something that, in my opinion, walks the line between "art," made through creative expression, and aesthetically pleasing material reproductions created for profit.

In fact, some museums are dedicated entirely to this premise, like the Denver Selfie Museum. I find the idea of a museum created exclusively for taking pictures of oneself somewhat off-putting, but I will not deny that I enjoy the occasional "photo opp."
