sometimes i feel a little sad that i didn't grow up in one of those countries where nudity and bathhouses are just part of everyday culture. That part of human history is fascinating

then you have the moral panic around queerness in the 70s and 80s, and then the HIV crisis in the 90s. Even gender-segregated nudity was pathologized. It became sinful, private, and sexualized. A lot of issues we have around sex and sexuality can be traced to this paranoia, I think.

I wish I had the time to research this, but my operating thesis based on my anecdotal conversations with old people is that gender-segregated nudity culture was very common in Mexico, but it died down after the religious reactionary waves of the 50s and 60s

indigenous cultures had daily bathing routines, and post-Conquest bathing houses were common and exploded in popularity as urban centers grew in population during the Porfiriato, which makes sense since water acces has always been an issue
