Now, I'm all up discussing why I drew a semantic line in the sand to distinguish two starkly different ways of being a professional destroyer of things and killer of people.
THE JOURNAL OF CHARACTER & LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT / WINTER 2021 12 In recent articles published on the topic, the term warrior, and the idea of warrior ethos, have drawn much undeserved criticism. In the April 2020 piece, On the Toxicity of the Warrior Ethos, Ryan Noordally uses an inaccurate and prejudicial 37-year-old definition of warrior from John Keegan when stating that a warrior is, “a professional fighter trained since childhood whose class or caste holds power. Warriors feel they own the exclusive right to apply violence or bear arms.” (Noordally, 2020). Noordally justifies his position by taking a swipe at Zach Snyder’s 2006 film 300. After defining warriors as amoral rapists, murders, slave holders, and oppressors, he explains why the modern military should not aspire to be warriors at all. His argument is fundamentally flawed, and this article will examine the reasons why. First of all, alarmists can settle down. The U.S. military is not seeking to reinstate 5th Century B.C. cultural practices of ancient Greece. We are not looking to start throwing ugly babies off cliffs for the good of society and, in fact, the Air Force has one of the most active anti-sexual assault education and training campaigns in the country. Secondly, the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines ‘warrior’ as a person who fights in a battle or war (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionaries, n.d.) and Merriam-Webster defines ‘warrior’ as a person engaged or experienced in warfare (Merriam-Webster, n.d.-b). The portion of 300 we would focus on is the scene where Leonidas asks the Athenian ‘soldiers’ their professions. They answer potter, sculptor, and blacksmith. All 300 of the Spartans are professional soldiers. Going back to Merriam-Webster, the definition of soldier is one engaged in military service; a skilled warrior (Merriam-Webster, n.d.-a). The U. S. Nous avons pour objectif d’installer dans les campagnes françaises un million de paysans et ce sera la seule façon de limiter significativement le recours aux pesticides. L’agroécologie paysanne ne sera alors plus pratiquée par quelques marginaux cantonnés dans des sortes de « réserves », mais deviendra le modèle agricole dominant à l’échelle d’une nation comme la nôtre. Un bouleversement aussi important ne sera pas concédé par les élites politiques et économiques sans le surgissement d’un mouvement social. Les King's Royal Hussars (KRH) sont surnommés les "Cherubims" (chérubins), c'est une contrepèterie sur leur véritable surnom : the "Cherry bums" à cause de leurs pantalons écarlate, peut-être un souvenir un peu honteux de la fois où ils se sont fait humilier dans un verger de cerisiers en Espagne.

Les "pipers", cornemuseux, ne sont pas l'apanage du Highland Regiment descendant de tous les régiments écossais. Il y en a chez les Scots Guards, évidemment, mais aussi au 19 Royal Artillery, de tradition écossaise.
Mais il y en a également chez... les Gurkhas, un héritage colonial assez commun.

Le Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (RRF) seul a conservé le nom de "fusilier" même si le grade de Fusilier survit au Royal Welch. Les deux unités arborent un plumeau blanc ("hackle") à leur béret mais celui du RRF est également rouge, d'avoir été trempé dans du sang de soldats français, paraît-il.

"Sergent" étant un descendant étymologique de "servant", ce grade est banni de la Household Cavalry où même le "trooper" de base était autrefois un gentilhomme; nuls serviteurs dans les troupes montées de la Maison du Roi.
Du coup, le grade de Corporal of the Horse (CoH) remplace celui de sergent.

The Blues and Royals were formed in 1969 from an amalgamation of the Royal Horse Guards, which was known as "the Blues" or "the Oxford Blues", and the Royal Dragoons, which was known as "the Royals". As a result of the Options for Change Review in 1991, the Blues and Royals formed a union for operational purposes with the Life Guards as the Household Cavalry Regiment. However, they each maintain their regimental identity, with distinct uniforms and traditions, and their own colonel. The Blues and Royals currently has two reconnaissance squadrons in Windsor, which are part of the Household Cavalry Regiment, and a mounted squadron in London as part of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment. Instead of being known as the Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons, the regiment is known as the Blues and Royals and is therefore the only regiment in the British Army to be officially known by their nickname as opposed to their full name. On ceremonial occasions, the Blues and Royals wear a blue tunic (inherited from the Royal Horse Guards, also known as "the Blues"), a metal cuirass, and a matching helmet with a red plume worn unbound, and against popular belief the regiment's farriers wear a red plume like the rest of the regiment but do not wear the metal cuirass. In addition, the Blues and Royals wear their chin strap under their chin, as opposed to the Life Guards, who wear it below their lower lip. On service dress, the Blues and Royals wear a blue lanyard on the left shoulder, as well as a Sam Browne belt containing a whistle. In most dress orders, the Waterloo Eagle is worn on the left arm as part of dress traditions. The Blues and Royals, as part of the Household Division, does not use the Order of the Bath Star for its officer rank 'pips,' but rather the Order of the Garter Star.
