At best they'd end up dishonorable discharges which would really screw their chances of getting new jobs. At worst, and it really could happen if their COs are trumpy enough, they could end up in jail. I'd rather they embarrass him with intentionally shit marching than jail themselves for no win.

Not believing in and not wanting to follow lawful orders doesn't exempt them from punishment for not following those lawful orders. The orders suck ass and everyone knows it, but they're not illegal and they don't violate codes of conduct either, so they don't have much recourse.

The way you talk about this scenario it's clear to me you're thinking about how you personally would respond, and all that tells me is that you are scared shitless of being attacked and shouldn't have access to a firearm.

Also, you asked what the cops should do, not what I or some other rando mcrando should do. I dont give a shit what you think my rights should be, I give a great deal of a shit what a cop should be doing to minimize the chance of death in an altercation. Injury is infinitely preferable to death.

Your mistake is thinking that it matters what the "easiest" route is. The easiest route is shooting people, that's why so many dumbasses shoot people. You asked for alternatives, not easy routes, and your got them. Cops become cops knowing it's a dangerous job.

And yes, I do expect the police to be willing to physically disarm a dangerous person. That's what the police are for and are, again, given training to do, even if they won't. They're not there to execute people.

So you're gonna ignore the part where two of those suggestions were "dodge him" and "outrun him till he wears himself out", huh? Neither of these are complicated or wacky TV shit. And they could figure out immediately on arrival that they could do it, because he was outdoors when they arrived.

You may notice that all of my responses suggest a certain level of clearheadedness and forethought. This is because THE POLICE WERE EXPLICITLY WARNED THAT HE WAS ARMED AND WHAT WITH. There is no explanation for shooting him in this scenario except negligence and incompetence.

You want actual answers? Fine. 1) DODGE. 2) Bring a riot shield since I was explicitly warned. If I can't get one, borrow a trash can lid. 3) Disarm. Cops have training in this (yes, even US ones), average person barely knows a basic grapple. 4) Run for a while. Wear his ass out, then tackle him.
