We’re the grassroots community effort to stop ODOT’s polluting, costly, dumb freeway expansions.

Climate leaders don’t widen freeways ❌🛣️❌
Good morning from the Oregon Transportation Commission!

The gang's all here once again in public testimony - @1000oregon.bsky.social's @wilsonxcassie.bsky.social, Verde's @indinmkng.bsky.social, @cityobservatory.bsky.social, @chrissmith.us + @aortarail.org's Doug Allen all speaking

Packed house for the @opb.org / @wgbh.org live taping of the cross over Big Dig / Stop Requested podcast! NMF co-founder @chrissmith.us is on tonight’s panel

NMF co-founder Joe Cortright @cityobservatory.bsky.social spoke to KGW about the latest updates on the Interstate Bridge Replacement - turns out the project is not doing so hot!

Where’s the accountability from the Oregon legislature and the Governor?

We’re excited to be in Connecticut for @yimbytown.bsky.social but a welcome note from AASHTO at the train station is quite an ominous start

Nice of the Oregonian to cite NMF co-founder and @cityobservatory.bsky.social’s Joe Cortright in their Sunday editorial chastising ODOT’s lack of accountability for spending

Joe's remarks get to the heart of why we founded No More Freeways.

Oregon faces many challenges, and continuing to give ODOT a blank check for reckless spending of billions of dollars on proposals for polluting freeway expansions that don't even solve congestion just makes everything worse.

Hope you had a chance to check out @wweek.com's interview of @cityobservatory.bsky.social's Joe Cortright. Is anyone in the Governor's Office or the Oregon Legislature willing to hold ODOT accountable? #orleg #orpol www.wweek.com/news/2025/08...

Milwaukee tore out their urban freeways to make room for more housing

Portland wants to spend billions doubling the width of I-5 through North Portland. #orleg #orpol

unreal they keep showing this video despite the fact it pretty much gives away that this seven billion dollar, five mile freeway expansion is masquerading as simple bridge replacement.

In less than eighteen hours, No More Freeways and our partners turned out nearly 100 emails and nearly a dozen pieces of oral testimony to the Oregon Transportation Commission, for a meeting was rescheduled with little public notice.

Y'all are the best.

No More Freeways and our partners are optimistic that our continued organizing, education of policymakers and advancing litigation will instead lead towards a truly restorative investment in Albina that doesn’t pollute the neighborhood with dirty air and more traffic.

The OTC's failure to engage in an honest reckoning about ODOT’s bungling of this project is disappointing on its own terms, but it is downright reckless and irresponsible in the context of the profound challenges that Oregon’s transportation system is currently facing. #orleg #orpol

With continued uncertainty from the federal government, Oregon’s leadership must step up to invest in the critical infrastructure that keeps our state moving. That means investing in maintaining existing roads, safer streets, and protecting transit - not spending billions on polluting freeways.
July 31, 2025 at 1:55 AM
ODOT will publish breathless press releases during this month’s groundbreaking ceremony to demonstrate that there are literal “shovels in the ground” and that this entire freeway expansion is well underway, despite the reality that ODOT is short billions of dollars to actually complete this project.
July 31, 2025 at 1:55 AM
Despite the irrelevance to the freeway widening, ODOT is eager to frame these smaller piecemeal investments as part of the Rose Quarter Freeway Expansion.
July 31, 2025 at 1:55 AM
The Oregon Transportation Commission voted last week to give ODOT permission to begin construction of “Phase 1A” which includes unobjectionable investments in stormwater management and a seismic upgrade of a viaduct ramp. These components are prudent and responsible infrastructure investments.

What's next for the Rose Quarter Freeway Expansion?

tl,dr: the project is still hosed.

These two headlines provide a nice little snapshot on how politicians are handling transportation governance is in progressive, blue state Oregon. #orleg #orpol

The OTC has a choice to make - should we use our existing resources to preserve our existing roads highways and bridges and protect hundreds of critical ODOT maintenance jobs? Or should we plow forward with a two billion dollar freeway expansion with multiple lawsuits and no identified funding?

ACTION ALERT!

The Oregon Transportation Commission votes Thursday to consider pausing the $2,000,000,000+ proposal to double the width and number of freeway lanes for the Rose Quarter Freeway.

Materials *finally* dropped for Thursday morning's meeting.

With the loss of $412m from the feds and no state transportation package, the OTC appears to be contemplating putting a pause on the Rose Quarter Project:

The Oregon Transportation Commission was scheduled to meet on 7/31 in Corvallis, but curiously it appears they bumped up the meeting to *this* Thursday, in Salem.

Stay tuned!

“ODOT’s withdrawal affirms what No More Freeways and our allies have known all along: this proposal to double the width of the Rose Quarter Freeway through the Albina neighborhood is not in line with Portland’s policies, laws or values."
