I disagree, I think her strong political lean is “contrarian”, which is the lean of many journalists in positions like hers. Is there a conventional wisdom? Then her lean is against it. That’s how you stay “edgy”.

This is it exactly. NYT bristles at any criticism they get from moderates or liberals and refuses to engage and therefore has completely missed how much the overall credibility of the paper has been damaged. Every section is overshadowed by that.
