As a Portland resident, I can say that our city has been doing a lot of work since Covid and it’s finally starting to pay off. Downtown is probably the best it’s been since 2019 and the neighborhoods are probably better than they have been for a decade. National guard is the last thing we need.

The media is full of smart people who are being really dumb. He loves to be the center of attention and doesn’t care if it’s negative or positive… in fact, I think he prefers negative because then he can throw a tantrum about how unfair it all is…. Poor baby is being persecuted while he makes literally billions of dollars off his grift of the American people, many of whom have been duped by his rhetoric. Headlines should properly say, “Day ___ of congressional republicans refusing to use their constitutional power and responsibility to provide a check against an unconstitutional administration bent on transferring all the wealth to the most wealthy.” That can be the headline for pretty much ANY story about his actions and then the particulars can be in the fine print.

I think this is a distraction. Most people would not get it, republicans in congress will not pass it, they are not going to save enough from the destruction they are doing… in fact it will cost them more.

I am grateful that I got to visit my son when he was interning in Washington DC and that I got to bring my dad to visit the capital for the first time in his life at almost 80. Grateful to see it before the mess that is happening now. Our hotel was right across from the DOE. 💔

These ideas are not original to Vance or Bannon: In the 21st century, elected leaders such as Hugo Chávez or Viktor Orbán have also used their democratic mandates for the same purpose. Chávez fired 19,000 employees of the state oil company; Orbán dismantled labor protections for the civil service. Trump, Musk, and Russell Vought, the newly appointed director of the Office of Management and Budget and architect of the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025—the original regime-change blueprint—are now using IT operations, captured payments systems, secretive engineers, a blizzard of executive orders, and viral propaganda to achieve the same thing. This appears to be DOGE’s true purpose. Although Trump and Musk insist they are fighting fraud, they have not yet provided evidence for their sweeping claims. Although they demand transparency, Musk conceals his own conflicts of interest. Although they do say they want efficiency, Musk has made no attempt to professionally audit or even understand many of the programs being cut. Although they say they want to cut costs, the programs they are attacking represent a tiny fraction of the U.S. budget. The only thing these policies will certainly do, and are clearly designed to do, is alter the behavior and values of the civil service. Suddenly, and not accidentally, people who work for the American federal government are having the same experience as people who find themselves living under foreign occupation.

Continuing to work through Nexus by Yuval Noah Harari. My reflection this morning…
We must be curators of the information we take in, applying skepticism as we consider claims and look for evidence. Evidence isn’t about a gut feeling or what is loudest or what you hear most, it is what can be proved with documentation. We must ask what documentation? Who funded it? How many well known scholars in the field agree? How does it align with other proven facts? We must also listen to a wide variety of perspectives, even those we disagree with, to gain deeper understanding of the complexities. This is slow and often tedious work, but this is the process of developing an informed opinion and you don’t need a formal education to do it. My grandmother was one of the wisest and well informed people I knew, and she barely finished high school. All you need is some basic curiosity and concern for the common good.
