But this joy clashes with the brutal reality she's enduring. She doesn't even have time to mourn her father. She has to survive. The ceasefire certainly hasn't ended the genocide.

After Hani's death, I lost all contact. So it was a huge joy to finally be able to talk to Rowan and get to know her. She's a 24-year-old woman who wanted to become a teacher.

After Hani's death, I lost all contact. So it was a huge joy to finally be able to talk to Rowan and get to know her. She's a 24-year-old woman who wanted to become a teacher.

They are exhausted, they have nothing, and so far, they haven't seen that much of humanitarian aid. And anyway, once they've paid the $400 demanded by the owner of the sandy plot where their tent is pitched, there's not much left to buy food, clothes, blankets, medicine...

To reach the outside world and reach us, hoping we might believe them and help them, Rowan has to walk several kilometers to reach a place with a bit of cell service.

Like anyone with cancer, she should be able to rest and focus on her recovery and care. But how can she do that when she's sharing a tent with like fifteen other people?
