Uranium parts are returned to the Oak Ridge Y-12 plant, tritium bearing parts are returned to Savannah River, and recyclable parts are returned to the original site of manufacture. Other waste materials are separated for recycling or shipment to EPA approved disposal sites. Non-nuclear high explosive wastes are burned on site and the resulting ashes are shipped to an EPA approved disposal site. These particular bins containing copper, aluminum, silver, gold, and platinum are all nonnuclear parts that are recycled in the Amarillo area.

A pamphlet called Plutonium that looks like it was designed in PrintShopPro Weapons such as the B57 bomb are unloaded for disassembly following strict safety requirements. Color 8x10: Staging bunkers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Pantex Plant, near Amarillo, Texas. These highly secure facilities are located in a top security zone of Pantex Plant. Currently, 38 of the 60 units are used for temporary staging of nuclear weapons coming to or going from Pantex Plant. The other 22 units are used for the interim storage of sealed components or "pits" containing plutonium which are removed from disassembled weapons. Support Agencies and Contractors DOE Courier Section Weapons are transported to and from Pantex in specially equipped trucks operated by the DOE's Transportation Safeguards Division. These heavily armored trucks and trailers are driven by armed couriers who are DOE employees with the authority to use deadly force while protecting a shipment. Each convoy includes escort vehicles driven by additional couriers. Special com-munication equipment enables a con-trol center to track the exact location of each convoy as it rolls toward Pantex. The Pantex Courier Section has more than 100 employees. DOE TRANSPORTATION SAFEGUARDS DIVISION Battelle Pantex Battelle Memorial Institute is the subcontractor to Mason & Hanger for Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H), Waste Management (WM), and Environmental Resto-ration (ER) activities at Pantex Plant. Reflecting the needs of its clients in a global marketplace, Battelle focuses on such areas as commercial and in- Sandia WETL The Sandia Weapons Evalua-tion Test Laboratory (WETL) has been an important part of Pantex since 1966. There are about 17 highly trained technical employees assigned to the Sandia Department.
