eddie had played a gig in a small town far from hawkins, but his van broke on the way back. by some miracle steve was even further from home that time and on his way back he ends up just where eddie was stranded

they knew each other long before they met because dustin talked to each about the other, like it was just a matter of time until they eventually met (only dustin was actively trying to make it happen, tbh). and they did meet, but not how dustin had planned
